OTTUMWA — There was four-and-a-half hour ride, roughly 265 miles for Cherokee cross country teams between Cherokee and the Ottumwa Twilight cross country event, a first for the Braves and their fans that elected to make the trip.
There were a pair of ranked teams in both 5K races. Class 3A 17th-ranked Clear Lake (40) finished runner-up to Iowa City West (34). Class 2A 15th-ranked Cherokee girls wound up third with a 58 team score. In the boys event, third-ranked (Class 2A) Chariton captured gold (27), finishing ahead of runner-up Clear Lake (49), and 13th-ranked (Class 1A) Van Buren third with a 71 team score. The Cherokee boy’s wound up fourth place with a tally of 105.
There were 90 runners in the varsity girls 5K. All seven runners for Cherokee finished 31st place or better. Four Cherokee runners Grace Woodall (sixth place), Addyson Wilkie (12th place), Stefi Beisswenger (13th place), and Ella Simonsen (15th place). The fifth and final place finish counting toward the team total was Miriam Riggert, who finished 20th.
Individual girls medalist went to Clear Lake sophomore Addison Doughan, who entered the event 13th-ranked in Class 3A. She finished with a first place showing in a 19:55.1 clocking.
From a field of 102 varsity runners in the boy’s 5K, 13 proved to be the lucky number for Braves senior Kyler Ducommun. Ducommun finished in 13th place with a 18:45.3 showing. All five counting scores for Cherokee came from finishes in the Top 37 place finishes. Cully-Mizner-Funderman was 16th, Riley Swartz was 21st, Hayden Brown was 24th and Grady Mizner-Funderman was 37th place.
Medalist and runner-up medalist in the varsity boy’s 5K race was 10th-rannked (Class 1A) Lincoln Bainbridge, a junior from Van Buren with a time of 16:39.7, finishing ahead of sophomore Lucas Anderson of Chariton. Anderson is 20th-ranked individually in Class 2A. He finished with a runner-up clocking of 17:11.9.
