Royals dominate Wolverines, 44-7
PAULLINA — A winless South O’Brien football team needed to get off to a good start against Class A District 1 opponent MMCRU on Friday. But it was the guest Royals running out to a 22-0 halftime lead. MMCRU outscored the Wolverines 22-7 in the second half, earning the lopsided 44-7 victory.
It marks back-to-back wins for MMCRU against South O’Brien, outscoring the Wolverines 92-27, a margin of 32.5 points per game differential. Prior to last season’s meeting, South O’Brien had won seven straight meetings.
South O’Brien came in the game with 347 yards of total offense (62 rushing, 285 passing), a meager 115.7 yards per game. The Royals defense came up with four fumble recoveries and a pair of interceptions. MMCRU limited South O’Brien to a total of 37 total yards offensively. The Wolverines finished with 38 carries for 25 yards, and were 3-for-11 passing for 12 yards.
“We did some pretty good things defensively. There are things we still want to clean up, but overall it was a great team win. This was the best night of tackling we’ve had in a long-time. Our defense has gotten their rears chewed the last couple weeks, and tonight we made tackles happen. It was much improved and I’m thankful for that.”
Kyle Oswald, MMCRU head football coach
Eli Harpenau, Parker Glassmaker, Michael Peterson, and Mason Hill each had a fumble recovery. Jace Colling and Blake Barinsky came away with the interceptions for the Royals.
“It was a tough one. I told our guys we’ve got to put this one behind us and move on to next week. Offensively we couldn’t get anything going consistently. Defensively we gave up some scores. At times we fundamentally didn’t do the right thing.”
Mark Fuhrman, South O’Brien head football coach
Someone who has made a difference offensively for MMCRU has been junior Bryson Mulder, Since the junior’s return to the Royals in Week 3, the team fashions a 2-0 record and has averaged 44 points per game. Mulder has went over 100 rushing yards for the second straight week, finishing with 195 yards on 19 carries and three touchdown runs of 3, 5 and 33 yards. For the season, Mulder has 297 yards (8.0 yards per carry avg.) rushing on 37 carries. He has five rushing touchdowns in two games.

Mulder put the Royals first points on the scoreboard with 3:36 left in the first quarter on a short three yard burst. The touchdown was set up by Mason Hill’s fumble recovery at the South O’Brien 25 yard line. Gage Johnson converted the first of four PAT kicks he recorded in the contest.
Peterson hauled in a 34 yard pass from Harpenau at the 11:44 minute mark of the second quarter. Johnson than connected on the PAT pass to Eli Schlenger. With 5:44 left in the first half, it was Mulder once more finding paydirt on a five yard run. Johnson’s PAT gave the Royals a 22-0 lead.
There was four more possessions before the first half expired with two MMCRU interceptions, and South O’Brien’s Jaxon Weier with a fumble recovery and Derek Paulsen with an interception.
In a span of seven seconds there were a pair of three quarter touchdowns. With 5:01 left in the quarter, Mulder raced 33 yards to the end zone. Johnson added the PAT kick. On the ensuing kickoff, South O’Brien junior Brody Van Beek returned the football 70 yards for the score. Paulsen added the PAT kick for the Wolverines, cutting their deficit to 29-7.
With 1:56 remaining in the third quarter, the Royals’ Colling caught a 45 yard pass from Harpenau, followed by Johnson’s PAT kick.
The Royals put their exclamation point to the win with a Luke Kintigh three yard touchdown run with 5:23 remaining in the game. Kintigh also had the PAT run.
MMCRU amassed 389 yards of total offense (258 rushing, 131 passing).
“We took a step backwards from where we have been playing the past few weeks. I don’t know the reasoning. I’m a bit confused. We’ve got to be able to put things together offensively — put some scores together like we’ve been able to. Simply play together as a team, just try to get better.”
Mark Fuhrman, South O’Brien head football coach

Wolfpack outlasts Braves, handing Cherokee first loss
HULL — One could argue playing a pair of Class A, and one game against a 1A school didn’t prepare Cherokee for the rigors of Class 2A District 1 play.
Friday, the 3-0 unbeaten Braves suffered their initial loss of the season, losing to Western Christian in the district opener, 20-14.
“I don’t know what it is about that team. It sure makes my teams play kind of funky. We were definitely out of sorts for most of the game. Turnovers and penalties didn’t go our way. We were prepared, but we didn’t act like it.”
Tony Gunter, Cherokee head football coach
The Braves first two offensively possessions of the game resulted in punts. On its third offensive possession, the Braves put the game’s initial points on the scoreboard courtesy of a Jaxon Paulsrud 6 yard pass, with Coy Lewis adding the PAT kick with 9:31 remaining in the opening half of play.
The remainder of the second quarter belonged to the host Wolfpack who chewed up the clock offensively. Western Christian’s first scoring drive was a eight-play, 64 yard touchdown drive finalized with a 33 yard pass completion from Landen DeStigter to Kaden De Jager for the score. The PAT kick was no good, making it a 7-6 Cherokee advantage with 5:13 left in the second quarter.
Paulsrud then had a pass intercepted on the Braves next offensive possession. DeJager pulled the pass in and returned in all the way back to the Braves’ 20 yard line. With 1:37 left on the clock, DeStigter connected with Lane Maassen on a short four yard touchdown pass. The duo followed that up connecting once gain on the PAT pass.
Western Christian went to the locker room at halftime leading Cherokee 14-7.
The Wolfpack made it 20 unanswered points when they struck again on the Braves with 5:33 left in the third quarter on a De Jager one yard dive into the end zone. The kick once again failed, but Western Christian led 20-7.
The fleet-a-foot Paulsrud got into the open field and scampered 72 yards to the end zone for the score. Lewis added the PAT kick and with :42 seconds remaining in the third quarter the Braves deficit was just six points, 20-14.
It was a disastrous fourth quarter for the Braves offensively. Cherokee turned the ball over on a fumble to Western Christian, and on their final possession threw a interception. The Wolfpack simply than ran the clock out.
The Wolfpack wins makes it two straight against Cherokee going back to last season. Both outcomes have been decided by seven or fewer points.
The Braves netted 252 yards of total offense to Western Christian’s 287. For the Wolfpack, 200 of their yards came threw the air. They finished with only 87 yards rushing on 29 carries. Cherokee also finished with 29 carries, but finished with 156 rushing yards. Paulsrud finished as the Braves leading rusher toting the pigskin 10 times for 112 yards. He finished 9-for-18 with the aforementioned two interceptions for 96 yards, and the one touchdown throw to Lugar.
“Our running game was pretty much eliminated tonight. Blake (Lovell) couldn’t get free. We got a few decent runs, but not enough to keep the ball in our hands — too many mistakes on the offensive side to overcome.”
Tony Gunter, Cherokee head football coach
Maassen tied Kolby Heemskerk with six catches to lead the Wolfpack in receptions. Karsten Moret finishing with the most receiving yardage, tallying 63 on two catches. Massen finished with 62 receiving yards.
DeStigter finished the game with 26 pass attempts, completing 16 (61.5%) for the aforementioned 200 yards passing and pair of touchdowns.
Mallon Malausky led the Braves defense with eight tackles. Paulsrud finished with 7.5 stops, including six solo tackles, two tackles for loss, and two quarterback sacks. Brayden Good got to De Stigter for a quarterback sack and had a pair of tackles for loss.
Cherokee (3-1, 0-1) travels to Rock Rapids this Friday to face the Lions from Central Lyon/George-Little Rock (3-1, 1-0).
