Braves capture Cherokee Invitational crown, Ridge View struggles finishing 1-3 in match play

CHEROKEE — The annual Cherokee Invitational volleyball Tournament was held on Saturday. Eight Northwest Iowa schools were represented — Boyden-Hull, host Cherokee, LeMars, MOC/FV, Ridge View, Sheldon, Sioux City East, and Sioux City West.

The host Braves, ranked fifth in Class 3A by Iowa Prep Illustrated came away winning the tournament with a 4-1 match record, defeating Sioux City East (21-18, 23-21) in the team’s final match of the tournament.

Cherokee also posted wins over Ridge View (21-10, 21-9), Sioux City West (21-15, 21-8), and MOC/FV (19-21, 21-16, 15-9). The lone setback for Cherokee came at the hands of Boyden-Hull (12-21, 21-19, 13-15).

Ridge View was struggling coming into the Cherokee Invitational having lost seven of its last eight matches. Five of those losses coming in the challenging Master Blaster Tournament a week earlier hosted by South Central Calhoun. The Raptors have been without senior setter Lilly Whitmer and senior middle hitter Sydney Blackmore and its shown.

Cherokee’s kill leader is senior Laney Wolfswinkel, who didn’t hurt her numbers as she finished the tournament with 37 kills and a .308 kill effiency.

Cherokee’s win against Ridge View was the fourth consecutive. The Braves maintain a 5-3 won-loss advantage over the Raptors since 2010.
