Up and Down day, Royals finish 2-3 at West Monona Tournament

ONAWA — The MMCRU volleyball team had a roller coast of an event on Saturday, finishing with two wins in five matches at the West Monona Tournament.

It was a good showing for Royals defensive specialist Breanna Staab. The senior came into the tournament have posted her 500th career dig in a match against South O’Brien on Tuesday. She added to that total with 45 more digs over five matches Saturday with a total of 12 coming against the host Spartans and another 10 in a match victory over Woodbine.

The Tournament got off to a reasonably good start to MMCRU with a 2-1 match victory over Logan-Magnolia. Set scores were 19-21, 21-6, 15-9.

A season ago, MMCRU split a pair of matches with Logan-Magnolia. The Panthers still maintain a 4-2 edge in all-time meetings since the start of the 2017 season.

The loss is the fourth consecutive loss for Logan-Magnolia on the season.

Freshman Peyton Busch had a good match for the Royals. She led them in kills with five. She added two digs, was part of a block with teammate Gracie Schroeder, and was 10-for-11 serving (90.9%) with a pair of aces to her credit.

MMCRU finished with match against the Panthers 46-for-53 in serves with 11 aces. Aleah Lux and Schroeder each finished with two aces. Senior Kylie Harpenau led the Royals with four aces.

For Logan-Magnolia (2-7) Stephanie Schmit accounted for all four of the Panthers aces in the match setback.

Following the match win MMCRU’s match record stands 2-7.

Yet another Harrison County school West Lyon was the Royals next opponent. It was an extremely competitive first set with MMCRU dropping the set 19-21. In the second set, MMCRU had its six match win streak against West Harrison end with a 14-21 set loss to the Hawks.

Tyler Stirtz accounted for all but two of the Hawks seven kills. She also finished with three digs and a perfect 7-for-7 with pair of aces in the win. Chloe Leinen and Kaitlyn Evans each had two aces. West Harrison was a perfect 34-for-34 with a total of eight aces against MMCRU.

MMCRU had seven service errors, finishing 25-for-32 (78.1%) and registered five aces. Tentinger was 8-for-10 with three aces, and Aleah Lux finished up 7-for-9 with an ace for the Royals.

The win improves the Hawks match record to 4-3 overall on the season.

The Boyer Valley school district is comprised of students out of Crawford, Harrison, Monona and Shelby Counties. After dropping the opening set 16-21 to Boyer Valley, MMCRU stayed in an extremely competitive second set before falling 20-22.

It was the third consecutive win by a Bulldog’s team in all-time meetings. MMCRU stills leads the series 4-3 going back to the beginning of the 2017 season.

The Royals finished with 14 kills and an efficiency of .178. Boyer Valley wound up with 19 kills and a efficiency of .269. The Royals were led by Chloe Alesch’s four kills.

Boyer Valley’s Slyvia Sullivan had a match-best six kills and a sparkling efficiency of .417, while teammate Reese Miller finished with five kills and a efficiency of .267. Miller also added eight digs, and finished 11-for-12 serving with four of the Bulldogs 10 aces. Maria Puck finished with a match-best 10 digs against MMCRU.

MMCRU finished the match 32-for-37 with five aces. Three of those aces belonged to Tentinger. Brielle Lux was a flawless 7-for-7 serving for the Royals. Harpenau and Aleah Lux each had one ace to round out the Royals total.

West Monona made it three consecutive match wins against MMCRU, and still lead 6-3 in all-time meetings. The two teams have had only one match go beyond two sets, that was a West Monona victory on Sept. 10, 2022.

MMCRU finished with four fewer kills than West Monona (18-14), finishing with a .000 kill efficiency. It was the freshman, Busch that led MMCRU with four kills. Aleah Lux, Tentinger and Alesch each tallied three kills.

The Royals had their best serving effort of the season, finishing 32-for-32 with three aces. Staab went 10-for-10 with an ace, and Aleah Lux was 7-for-7 with an ace for the Royals.

Staab had her best outing of the day posting 12 digs against West Monona.

A pair of juniors did most of the damage for West Monona in Carly Stangel and Brihanna Hill. Stangl finished with eight assists, four kills, 12 digs and was 7-for-7 with a ace serve in her statistical line. Hill had five kills, one block and finished 13-for-13 with an ace.

In their final match of the tournament, MMCRU was in a edge of your seat nail-biter with Woodbine. Both sets favored the Royals 22-20.

It was an incredible performance in attack for Royals sophomore Aleah Lux. The near six-footer posted a match-best 10 kills and a .409 kill efficiency. Lux accounted for all but six of the Royals kill total.

Busch wound up 10-for-10 with two aces, Tentinger finished with four aces on 13-for-15 serving. As a team, MMCRU finished 40-for-43 (93%) with seven total aces.

Woodbine was led by Danyelle Steinkuehler and Katy Pryor each with four kills. The Tigers finished 35-for-40 (87.5%) with six aces — Hannah Wendt (3), Reese Lenders (2) and Steinkuehler (1).

MMCRU (3-10) returns to War Eagle Conference action tonight in Remsen hosting George-Little Rock (5-5).
