ROCKWELL CITY — The Ridge View volleyball team was riding a seven match win streak heading into play Saturday at the ‘Master-Blaster’ Tournament hosted by South Central Calhoun.
It would be no easy chore against a competitive field of teams which included bigger school’s like Winterset and Carroll, not to mention Iowa Prep Illustrated’s Class 3A fourth-ranked Knights of Carroll Kuemper.
It would be equally difficulty playing without senior middle hitter Sydney Blackmore, out with an ankle injury. Then to make matters worse, the Raptors lost senior setter Lilly Whitmer in the team’s final match of the day to a possible concussion.
Ridge View finished the tournament with a 1-4 match record, including winning just 3-of-12 sets against the Raptors five opponents.
The Raptors would see a personal two match win streak broken against Winterset. The Huskies blanked Ridge View (2-0) 21-18, 21-14. Ridge View finished a minus -3 in kills (16-13. Kill efficiencies for the two teams were nearly identical. Winterset finished with .130, and Ridge View wound up with a .128 kill efficiency.
Serving was a respectable 91.4 percent (32-for-35) with four aces for Ridge View. Cadey Vohs finished 10-for-10 with three aces.
Host South Central Calhoun made it three straight match win against Ridge View, including defeating the Raptors back on August 27 (3-0) in the team’s season opener. Just as it the first meeting the biggest nemesis for Ridge View was the Titan’s Brenna McAlister. She finished with 13 kills and a .229 efficiency, nine digs and 20-for-22 serving with six aces in the teams meeting back in August.
On Saturday, McAlister finished the match with 10 kills, a .222 kill efficiency, 10 digs, and 17-for-19 serving with a pair of aces to her credit.
Ridge View struggled with their offensive attacks. They wound up with a .016 kill efficiency and was led by Naunika Crum’s five kills. Fort the second straight match, Zoey Aschinger led Ridge View with assists. She accounted for 12 of the 13 against Winterset, and 13 of the 14 assists against South Central Calhoun.
Ridge View fell by scores of 13-21, 21-19, and 8-15 to the tournament host South Central Calhoun.
Next was East Sac County, who ended a 10 match losing streak to Ridge View, that had dated back to September of 2021.
All three sets were extremely competitive/. Ridge View lost in three sets 20-22, 19-21, 13-15.
Senior setter Lilly Whitmer made her presence known, finishing with a match-best 24 assists. She sets for Raptor teammates allowed Ridge View to finish a plus +10 ill kill margin (31-21). Senior Gabi Mason got loose and finished with a team-best 10 kills. She also added eight digs, one block assist, and was 14-for-14 serving with an ace.
This was the second meeting this season meeting East Sac County and Ridge View, having previously met back on September 7 in the Ridge View Classic finals, a 2-0 Raptors win.
Another winning streak was snapped for Ridge View as Carroll ended a two match losing streak to the Raptors. Carroll won by set scores of 21-18 and 21-10. Highly touted senior Emily Puck for Carroll posted a match-best 18 assists, adding six digs and a flawless performance at the service line. She finished 12-for-12 with an ace serve.
Carroll finished with 20 kills and a team kill efficiency of .200, while led by Olivia Rowedder’s eight kills and a .500 efficiency.
Mason swung away and finished with a match-best 11 kills, finishing with all but three of the Raptors total. Whitmer finished with 16 assists.
A pair of familiar Western Valley Conference rivals met next with the Raptors facing Kingsley-Pierson. Ridge View outlasted the Panthers winning by set scores of 21-10, 12-21, and 15-8. It was a Whitmer guided Raptors team that saw their senior finish with 20 of the team’s 21 assists. Whitmer was also 7-for-7 in service attempts with a pair of aces.
The Raptors finished with a .262 kill efficiency against Kingsley-Pierson. It was Mason with seven kills leading the way. Kiara Luscombe, Crum, and Clare Wandrey each with four kills.
Once Ridge View established service they weren’t any side outs, as they finished 47-for-47 with nine aces.
It was the eighth consecutive win over a Kingsley-Pierson squad for Ridge View going back to a five set (3-2) loss on Septemeber 1, 2000.
It was a nightmare for Ridge View against the fourth ranked Knights, who clearly marched to the beat of a different drummer. They blitzed Ridge View 21-8, 21-9.
For Carroll Kuemper they continue to have the Raptors number. The Knights won for the 14 consecutive meeting against Ridge View dating back to September 8, 2012.
It was a struggle as Ridge View finished with a negative -.079 kill efficiency and had only eight kills. Luscombe led the Raptors with five kills and Mason finished with three, bring Mason’s team leading kill total on the season to 101.
