Cherokee moves to 3-0 with Homecoming win over Ridge View

CHEROKEE — Junior Blake Lovell continued to lead Cherokee rushing attack, finishing just four yards shy of 200 rushing yards against Ridge View on Friday at George Hicks Field.

Lovell was coming off a 202 yard rushing performance on 15 carries and a touchdown against Sioux Central a week earlier. Add his 196 yards against Ridge View on 19 carries brings his season numbers to 507 yards (11.3 YPC) on 45 rushing attempts and six touchdowns on the season toting the pigskin.

It was a quiet second half of non-district play as neither team put points on the scoreboard in the second half. Cherokee scored all 25 of its points in the opening two quarters and held on for a 25-13 victory over the Raptors.

Cherokee scored on its opening possession of the game on its first play from scrimmage. With 9:28 left in the first quarter, Lovell ran around the right end in front of Ridge View’s bench and down the sideline 47 yards. Coy Lewis added the PAT kick and the Braves led 7-0.

Before the end of the opening quarter, Lewis put his foot to the football from 35 yards out for the field goal that staked the Braves to a 10-0 lead.

On the ensuing kickoff, Ridge View ran five plays beginning at their own 35 yard line before the first quarter clock expired. With 10:25 left in the first half of action, Raif Jensen connected with a leapin’ Kinnick Jensen that pulled down a 13 yard pass in the back right corner of the end zone for the Raptors first score. Kellen Jensen added the PAT kick and Ridge View trailed 10-7.

Ridge View would take their only lead of the contest with 5:47 left in the second quarter when Raif Jensen capped off a seven play drive finding the end zone from six yards away. The Raptors PAT kick was no good and Ridge View held the lead 13-10.

Cherokee offensive line and the Raptors defensive line was locked up in a serious battle at the line of scrimmage. That was until Lovell struck again on a 66 yards touchdown run. Lewis added the PAT kick, and with 5:08 remaining in the third quarter, Cherokee had the lead back 17-13.

Braves signal-caller Jaxon Paulsrud, a tough and solid 190 pounder went to the air waves for Cherokee’s final score. The Braves began at Ridge View 44 yard line with 15 seconds remaining. Two plays later, Paulsrud found Jacob Hurd on a 25 yard hook-up as time expired. Henry Lugar then made the PAT pass to the Braves 6-foot-6 receiver Christian Vander Broek.

Ridge View had two red zone possessions in the second half that saw the Braves hold on three straight plays — second, third, and fourth and goal that began offensively at the Raptors 10 yard line and ended at the two yard line.

Cherokee finished with 331 yards of total offense to Ridge View’s 237 total yards.

Paulsrud added 14 carries for 71 yards and was 8-for-15 passing with two interceptions for 74 yards. Hurd and Lovell each finished with 25 yards receiving and three and two receptions, respectively. Lugar added three grabs for 24 yards for Cherokee.

Ridge View’s Raif Jensen finished 8-for-21 passing for 103 yards and an interception. Jensen added 12 carries for a team-best 52 yards. Kellen Jensen finished with six catches to lead the receivers with 81 yards. The Raptors three interceptions belonged to Raif Jensen, Blake Myrtue and Gavin Vohs.

Ridge View loss drops the team record to (2-1, 0-0) with a Class 1A District 1 matchup this Friday against eight-ranked (1A) Hinton (3-0, 1-0) in Holstein. Cherokee (3-0, 0-0) opens Class 2A District 1 play at Western Christian (2-1, 0-1) this Friday. The Braves schedule has been somewhat light thus far with games against two Class A opponents (MMCRU, Sioux Central) and one against a Class 1A team (Ridge View).

The Crew is Back! Royals dominate HMS, 44-0

MMCRU — How sweet it is to have all the boys back together again to impose destruction of an opponent.

The Royals had played their opening two games of the season without up to as many as eight starters at one time. Now, that several of the ‘horses’ are back so is the football team. Friday, MMCRU left little doubt who was the better team, they demolished Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn 44-0 in a Class A District 1 affair.

MMCRU built a 7-0 lead following one quarter. The Royals’ Gage Johnson pulled down an Eli Harpenau 50 yard pass, then added the PAT kick with 7:07 remaining in the first quarter.

In a span of 19 seconds, MMCRU added two additional scores in the second quarter. Johnson booted a 24 yard field goal, and Brayson Mulder cashed in on a two yard run. Johnson PAT kick with 10:11 remaining in the first half was 17-0.

Coming out of halftime, MMCRU was tasting blood and showed no sympathy to Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn. Three more scored were tacked on in the third stanza of play. Johnson on a 12 yard run. Mulder adding his second touchdown run of the night, and Jace Colling getting into the act with a three yard run. Johnson converted two of three PAT kick. Mulder in his return finished with 18 carries for 102 yards and the pair of touchdowns runs. Harpenau added 54 and John Schmillen 51 rushing yards. Johnson led the receivers in yardage with three catches for 53 yards and the one touchdown grab.

Opportunties unfavorable for Wolverines in 28-22 loss

PAULLINA — During different opportunities to score, South O’Brien was unlucky on Friday. The Wolverines were first to put points on the scoreboard in the Class A district tilt with Sibley-Ocheyedan.

The Wolverines had a PAT kick in the second quarter fail, and two other drives stall in the second half on downs. The guest Generals came up with a huge stop of South O’Brien with five minutes remaining in the game, and held the football until the clock expired.

Sibley-Ocheyedan came away victorious 28-22 to stay unbeaten in district play at 2-0. The Generals improve to 2-1 overall. South O’Brien on the other hand remains winless at 0-3 and 0-1 in district play.

The Wolverines are threatening to match last season’s 0-5 start to the season as the next two weeks they host MMCRU, followed by a district road affair at Alta-Aurelia.

South O’Brien first to score was a Brody Van Beek touchdown grab from Brady Reidemann with 7:29 on the clock in the opening quarter. Derek Paulsen converted the PAT kick and the Wolverines led 7-0.

The Generals would answer on a flashing Kayne Julius finding paydirt from 22 yards away. Dougla Macias made the PAT kick, and the game was tied 7-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Sibley-Ocheyedan took the lead for good and never looked back in the second quarter of play. Hunter Kauffman had a 19 yards rushing touchdown with 9;23 on the scoreboard clock. Macias made his second PAT kick good, and South O’Brien trailed 14-7.

Paulsen and Riedemann then connected on a 50 pass for the first of two second quarters scores for the Wolverines. It was the fourth touchdown reception of the season for Paulsen. His PAT kick was no good, and with 5:14 remaining in the opening half the score favored Sibley-Ocheyedan 14-12.

On the ensuing kickoff, Kauffman returned the pigskin 75 yards for the touchdown and Macias added his third PAT kick of the game. Sibley-Ocheyedan now led 21-12 with 4:59 remaining in the first half.

The final points of the first half belonged to South O’Brien. 19 seconds later it was Van Beek from the one yard line returning the kickoff 99 yards for the score. the PAT pass attempt failed. The Wolverines trailed 21-19 at half.

It was a much quieter second half as the two teams combined for just 10 points. The only points of the third quarter went to Sibley-Ocheyedan. Tanner Griese had a 12 yard touchdown catch in the third quarter, and the Wolverines only points were a 27 yard Paulsen Field goal in the fourth with 7:28 remaining in the game.

“I thought we had scored when it was 28-19. We had a little pop pass to Reese Lundquist, and I thought he had come down with it, but Sibley’s defensive back knocked it away at the last second. Then we had the field goal missed that hit the crossbar. We eventually went down and got a Paulsen field goal that kept us in the game with an opportunity to win it. But in our only only time with the football, we gave it up on downs.”

Mark Fuhrmann, South O’Brien head football coach

Sibley-Ocheyedan finished the game with 100 more yards of total offense (332-232). Riedemann finished 7-for-20 passing with the two touchdown throws for 81 yards. The duo of Jaden Kreber and Jordan Jenness accounted for all but 18 of the rushing yards. Kreber and Jenness each carried the football 14 times. Kreber finished with 82 rushing yards and Jenness 51.

Paulsen finished with two catches for 54 yards for South O’Brien. The Generals Dawson Kreykes had a game-best four catches for 109 yards (27.2 YPC).

Julius threw 21 passes completing 11 with an interception for 167 yards. He also rushed for a game-best 93 yards on nine carries and the 22 yard TD run in the first half.

Defensively, Jenness finished with a game-best 9-1/2 tackles, including eight solo’s, a quarterback sack , and three tackles for loss. Paulsen came away with the interception for South O’Brien.
