Wolverines win streak ends, Westerners top South O’Brien in three sets
PAULLINA — South O’Brien volleyball team was swept at home by fellow War Eagle Conference Akron-Westfield on Thursday 3-0 (20-25, 17-25, 18-25).
It was a momentum killing match for South O’Brien who came into the matchup on a three match winning streak. South O’Brien’s loss are now 3-6 overall.
In the opening set, South O’Brien trailed 18-9 to the Westerners and rallied to make it much closer, falling 20-25. The second set went back-and-forth with 11 ties, before Akron-Westfield’s 5-0 run. It ended on a MaKenzie Hughes kill for the Westerners, 17-25.
The third set had Akron-Westfield jump out to a 7-1 lead on South O’Brien. A Chloe Hustedt tip at the net, got the Wolverines back to within a point at 9-10. A brief 3-0 run for South O’Brien forced three set/match points , before a net violation on South O’Brien ended the set and match, 18-25.
Akron-Westfield extended its win streak against South O’Brien to five straight matches. South O’Brien trails in the all-time series since 2008, 12-8. The last win for the Wolverines was a 3-2 win in Paullina on September 5, 2019.
“We did not play well at all. We weren’t even close to being the same team that had won the last three matches. We couldn’t get a decent offense going. What had been our mainstay so far up to this point, our defense had a lot of blocking errors.”

South O’Brien received 21 of the team’s 24 assists from Ashlynn Gunnerson. There were 24 kills to go with a .020 kill efficiency. Sophomore Reagan Plagge finished with a match-best nine kills. Hustedt added seven, Taylor Wulf six, Tori Schueller five and Reese Farquhar one kill. Farquhar finished with a match-best 15 digs, Addison Hedberg added 14, and Gunnerson 11 digs.

Simpson College basketball commitment, Hughes left her presence be known all over the statistical sheet. She paced the Westerners with eight kills, 12 digs, one block, and was 7-for-7 serving in the match. Fellow senior Josie Jacobs finished with 20 of the Westerner’s 26 assists. She added a match-best 16 digs, had a block, and finished with a match-best five aces on 12-for-12 service effort.
The match win improves Akron-Westfield’s match record to 4-4 overall.
The Wolverines return to War Eagle Conference action tonight against Iowa Prep Illustrated’s Class 2A third-ranked team Hinton.

HULL — MMCRU got off on the right side of things Thursday with a set one win over Trinity Christian, 28-26. But the War Eagle Conference battle saw things turn over the final three sets, all resulting in losses. The Royals loss 18-25, 17-25, 18-25.
MMCRU is only 1-5 in their last six matches, dropping their third consecutive to the Tigers. From October 2018 through August of 2021 had five consecutive wins against Trinity Christian.
Negative kill efficiency continues to take it toll on the Royals. Thursday’s negative -.008 marks the sixth time this season in eight matches MMCRU has struggled with its attacks. They finished with 28 errors and 27 successful kills in the loss. Chloe Alesch led MMCRU with eight kills. Aleah Lux added seven kills.
Trinity Christian had a duo of damage offensively. Madelyn Vis and Ava Klein recorded 12 and 11 kills, respectively for a Tigers team that finished with 40 total kills and a .162 kill efficiency. Kersten Brummel accounted for 31 of the Tigers 34 assists in the win.
It was an evening for the Royals serving to dip below 80 percent at 79 percent (64-81) with seven aces. Tia Tentinger accounted for five of the seven aces. Alesch and Brielle Lux each had one ace.
Royals’ senior defensive specialist Breanna Staab finished with a match-high 19 digs. Alesch provided 13 digs for MMCRU.MMCRU see’s its overall match record fall to 1-7. MMCRU traveled to the West Monona Spartans Tournament on Saturday. Tonight they return to War Eagle Conference action hosting George-Little Rock.

3A No. 7 Braves volleyball tallies North sweep
CHEROKEE — The Class 3A 7th-ranked Cherokee volleyball team rolled to a 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-14) sweep of Sioux City North. It marks the eighth straight win since the team’s lone loss at the Unity Christian Tournament to the host on August 31.
Cherokee’s victory snaps a three match losing streak to the North Stars. The Braves defense held North to a negative -.021 kill efficiency with 21 attack errors.
The Braves are developing the personality of being a strong attack team at the net. It’s always a group of four or five players making an impact with kills. Cherokee finished with 36 kills and a kill efficiency of .255 against Sioux City North.
Good as good is, senior hitter Laney Wolfswinkel led Cherokee with nine kills. Senior teammate Keylee Gregg finished with eight kills, as did sophomore Deidra Doeden. Addie Wolfswinkel tallied seven kills.
Addy Wolfswinkel led Cherokee with 18 assists, seconded by senior Elise Anderson’s 12.
The Braves finished with 33 more serve attempts (76-43) than Sioux City North. North maintained the slight edge in service percentage 90.7 percent to Cherokee’s 88.2 percent. Kendall Fox finished with a perfect effort of 12-for-12 with a pair of aces for the Braves.
North junior Kinslee Walrod was the North Stars leader is several area’s. She finished with 13 of the team’s 17 assists. She had a team-best 15 digs and finished 14-for-14 with two aces.
Sioux City North’s loss drops their match record to 1-5 overall. Cherokee is making a strong argument to be moving up in the polls.
