SIOUX CITY — One team and five points stood between the Class 2A No. 17-ranked Cherokee girls from being able to call themselves Lakes Conference team champions.
Spencer finished with a team score ahead of Cherokee total of 37. Storm Lake was a distant third place with a 78 team score. Individually from a field of 32 varsity runners Spencer’s Payton Morey completed the sweep for the Tigers. The senior finished with a winning time of 19:57.29.
Strongest challengers to have beating Morey were Storm Lake’s junior Silvia Kampball. Kampbell secured runner-up with a time of 20:14.28 in the 5K event. Settling in third place (bronze) was Cherokee’s Stefi Beisswerger. The Braves senior posting a 21:14.70 clocking.
All seven members of the Cherokee girls team finished in the Top-20 place finishes.. three of those runners claimed additional Top-10 place finishes — Grace Woodall (5th place), Addyson Wilkie (6th place), and Ella Simonsen (ninth place).
WHAT’S UP GUYS?
What’s up was Spirit Lake boy’s team was superior than the four remaining Lakes Conference Schools. The Indians finished with four of the of six individual place finishes, finishing with a 30 team score.
Thirty-Five varsity boy’s runners saw Spirit Lake’s Braden Hughes Dietrich Dirks finished one and two individually. Hughes finished with a winning time of 16:09.88, and Dirks finished the 5K event with an effort of 16:39.66 clocking.
Three Braves got into the Top-20 individual place finishes with junior Cully Mizner-Funderman the highest with a 18:09.29 posted time. Mizner-Funderman finished one place finish ahead of teammate Kyler Ducommun. Ducommun secured 12th place with an effort of 18:13.23. Hayden Brown was the final Cherokee runner in the Top-20. The Cherokee sophomore finished in 19:07.00.
