AKRON — It was a must win otherwise the season is over for South O’Brien in the Class 1A Region 4 first round match at Iowa Prep Illustrated seventh-ranked Akron-Westfield. The Westerners already own a victory this season, winning the regular season meeting back on Sept. 12. It was the sixth consecutive win for an Akron-Westfield team against South O’Brien, dating back to September 2019.
South O’Brien did some bending in the regional game played on Monday. The breaks were losses in three sets 19-25, 14-25, 19-25. The loss ends the Wolverines season with an 8-15 overall record. They bettered their win total by two from a season earlier. The Wolverines winning percentage of .348 is the best since the 2021 season.
Each team finished the regional first round matchup with 32 kills. South O’Brien finished with a kill efficiency of just .089, compared to the .245 efficiency mustered by the Westerners. Allie Swoyer finished with a team-best 11 kills for Akron-Westfield. The Wolverines’ leader was sophomore Raegan Plagge with nine kills. Freshman Tori Schueller finished with eight kills.
Swoyer also came away with a match-best 18 digs for Akron-Westfield. Josie Jacobs had a match-best 25 assists and finished with 14 digs. The Westerners duo also got it done serving the volleyball. Swoyer finished 14-of-14 with one ace. Jacobs finished 17-of-18 with a pair of aces.
As a team, South O’Brien finished the match 46-of-52 (88.5%) with two aces. Plagge was a perfect 11 -of-11, as was Ashlynn Gunnerson 7-of-7 with one ace.
The win by Akron-Westfield improves their match record to 19-4 overall. The Westerners will host another familiar foe from the War Eagle Conference in Trinity Christian (18-7) tonight in the 1A Region 4 semifinal.

MARCUS — For the first time in the Bound Era, Lawton-Bronson and MMCRU met up on the volleyball court in a Class 2A Region 7 first round matchup on Monday.
The host came away with a taxing four set win 27-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-18 against the Eagles. The Royals had limped into the post season having dropped three of their last four matches in the regular season.
Attacks were high in number, but not impressive in kill efficiency. MMCRU finished with 44 kills and a efficiency of .132. As a team, Lawton-Bronson finished with 37 kills and a .077 team kill efficiency. Kaylynne Newton finished with 13 kills and a efficiency of .320. The junior tied the Royals’ Chloe Alesch for match-high honors, each player finishing with 13. Alesch would finish with a respectable. 333 kill efficiency.
MMCRU was racking up assists along the way, finishing with 42. Tia Tentinger paced the Royals with 21 assists. Kylie Harpenau added 12 assists. The Royals had four players with double-digits in digs — Breanna Staab 21, Harpenau 11, Alesch 11, Tentinger 10.
MMCRU finished at a 91.6 percent (87-95) serving clip. Staab was a flawless 22-of-22 with an ace to her credit. Alesch and Gracie Schroeder each had an ace and Tentinger finished with a match-best four aces.
