MMCRU’s streak snapped, South O’Brien streak continues

MARCUS — You could notice more confidence and swagger from the South O’Brien volleyball team on Tuesday against host MMCRU.

The War Eagle Conference tilt saw the guest Wolverines snap a seventh match losing streak to MMCRU that went back to October 2018. At the same time, South O’Brien extended their win streak to three matches on the season, all coming in conference play.

South O’Brien upends the Royals 25-18, 25-17, 23-25, and 25-18.

“We are playing all right. I’m pleased. The way we are playing together as a team is our biggest success. Defensively, we are playing well at the net, and are covering the floor well. Our blocking was the best it’s been all season. Our timing is getting better. Right now, all of our defensive positions are passing pretty well so there isn’t really a weakness there for the opponents to exploit.”

Amy Schmidt, South O’Brien head volleyball coach

Both teams struggled opening the season each winless in its opening five matches. When South O’Brien had a plus .000 kill efficiency they are 3-1 on the season. In the last five meetings at MMCRU, the Wolverines own two victories and three losses.

Service errors (11) and attack errors (27) along the way took away from any legitimate MMCRU runs in the match.

South O’Brien had its second-best kill efficiency (.257) of the season, hammering home 43 kills against the Royals. MMCRU finished with 37 kills in the loss and a .075 kill efficiency. The Wolverines freshman Tori Schueller and junior Chloe Hustedt tied, each with a match-best 12 kills. Reagan Plagge added eight, and Taylor Wulf seven. Reese Farquhar came up with four kills. MMCRU was led by sophomore Aleah Lux’s 10 kills. Tia Tentinger added seven, Chloe Alesch six, Lana Florine and Brielle Lux each with five, while Deanna Partridge and Breanna Staab both finished with two.

The Wolverines’ Ashlynn Gunnerson finished with 32 of the team’s 36 assists. Tia Tentinger and Kylie Harpenau finished with 18 and 15 assists, respectively leading MMCRU.

“Balance has been key for us offensively for all positions on the floor. We’re making better decisions at the net. We’re serving well too. Our communication is improved, and our chemistry keeps getting better. If we had a weak area tonight, it would’ve been in the serving area. We only served 89% and that has to improve”

Amy Schmidt, South O’Brien head volleyball coach

South O’Brien finished with 97 service attempts, coming away with seven aces, and a service percentage of 88.7 percent. MMCRU finished with 78 attempts from behind the service line, finishing with four aces and a 85.9 percent service percentage. Plagge and Abby Woodall each had errorless efforts in serving for the Wolverines. Plagge was 13-for-13 with one ace. Woodall finished 10-for-10. Aleah Lux went 8-for-8 with an ace for the Royals.

MMCRU falls to 1-6 on the season overall and South O’Brien’s record stand at 3-5. Both teams were in action on Thursday. MMCRU traveled to Trinity Christian, and South O’Brien was home against Akron-Westfield.
