Cherokee’s Kohn first team All-Lakes Conference baseball, Three total Braves recognized

The Lakes Conference coaches have announced their All-Lakes Conference teams for the 2024 baseball season. Cherokee finished the season last in the Lakes with a 1-7 league record. Overall the Braves finished up 11-14, ending the home season at Kenny Bern Field with a 6-6 record.

Cherokee lost its Class 2A Substate 1 quarterfinal in Larchwood in heartbreaking fashion, 3-2, falling to Unity Christian.

Completing the sweep of the Lakes Conference titles was Estherville-Lincoln Central Central. The Midgets baseball team finished the conference season with an unbeaten (7-0) record, just like the softball program. They were 20-6 overall. The Midgets had five first team honoree’s and two players were named to the second team.

Senior Alex Kohn was named to the All-Lakes First Team as an infielder. He led the Braves in seven categories: Hits (26), RBI (21), BA (.342), OBP (.462), SLG (.382), Pitching Appearances (12), and Pitching Starts (8). He also tied for the team lead with teammate Henry Lugar for runs scored (21). He also swiped 19 bases, and as a pitcher finished with a 2-6 record in 46 innings pitched. His ERA came in at 4.26, and opponents batted just .189 off the right-hander.

Lugar and Drew Spooner were both named to the second team. Lugar, a junior, led the Braves in at-bats (77), stolen bases (33), and hit by pitch (7). Lugar tied Kohn for the team-high in runs scored (21), was second on the team in RBI (14), hitting at a .273 clip with an OBP of .417 and .338 slugging percentage. Lugar was announced as an outfielder. He also made two appearances on the pitcher’s mound logging 1.1 innings.

Spooner, a senior, picked up second team honors for the utility/DH position. This season he was the lone Braves player to hit a home run (1). He finished with 11 RBI, .200 BA, .368 OBP, and .283 slugging percentage. He got to make two varsity starts as a pitcher, finishing with a 1-0 record in nine innings of work. Opponents hit only .171 off the right-hander.
