Braves fend off Emmetsburg to stay unbeaten
CHEROKEE — An early non-conference battle between Emmetsburg and Iowa Prep Illustrated’s Class 3A seventh-ranked Cherokee turned into just that — A BATTLE!
It was a slow start for Cherokee as they trailed after one quarter 12-5, but eventually did enough to slip past a scrappy E’Hawks squad 45-38.
Cherokee was playing the game minus one of its starters in sophomore post player Deidra Doeden, who had to sit out the game as a result of her ejection in the season opener against Sioux City West. Head Coach Brandon Slaughter played just six players, hesitant to test his unproven and young bench.
By halftime Cherokee and retaken the lead 22-20. The third quarter it was Emmetsburg’s turn to outscore the Braves once more 12-8 for the 32-30 lead at the conclusion of the quarter.
It was the Braves tenacity over the final eight minutes of play despite two of its starters having to go with four fouls — Addy Wolfswinkel and Macy Gravenish.
Cherokee shot a better percentage from beyond the 3-point arch than inside the 19-feet 9-inch distance. The Braves converted 7-of-13 3-point attempts for 53. 34.9 percent 8 percent. Inside the arch Cherokee was just 8-of-30 (27%) shooting.
The number 13 proved lucky for a pair of Cherokee players — Addy Wolfswinkel and Kadyn Volkert who each finished with 13 points. Wolfswinkel added team-high’s with five assists and four steals, to go with four rebounds. The leader on the ‘glass’ was Laney Wolfswinkel. She tied the E’Hawks’ Nora Nelson for game-high honors each finishing with six rebounds.
Nelson also led Emmetsburg in scoring with 11 points. As a team, Emmetsburg finished 12-of-39 (30.8%) shooting overall, including 4-of-18 (22.2%) for the 3-point distance.
The win by Cherokee makes its 13 consecutive wins in the series dating back to the E-Hawks last win against the Braves on Feb. 7, 2014, a 54-47 win, behind junior Ashton Connelly’s 21 points.

Cold shooting in opener for MMCRU, falls to H-LP
REMSEN — Early season nerves, playing tentative at times, cold shooting and poor decision making in its season opener cost MMCRU against Harris-Lake Park.
Tuesday’s opener remained close the first half. It wasn’t until being outscored 10-3 in the third quarter that eventually led to a 10-point 47-37 loss. It was a tale of two halves for the Royals shooting wise. In the first half MMCRU made 9-of-21 (43%) of its shot attempts. The second half the Royals found a lid on the basket, finishing 4-of-26 (15%) shooting from the floor.
MMCRU also struggled to take care of the basketball as they finished a minus -6 in turnover margin (24-18). Rebounding saw the Royals with a 31-30 edge on the glass. Cora Niemeier pulled down a game-best 10 boards for Harris-Lake Park. Chloe Alesch led MMCRU with seven rebounds and Aleah Lux and Riley Groves each finished with six.
Harris-Lake Park managed to build an eight point 22-17 lead behind a 7-0 run after the teams were tied at 17-17 with 5:05 left in the opening half of play. The first half ended with the Royals trailing 27-23.
The swing in the game occurred when the Royals shooting was nearly non-existent in the third period. Tia Tentinger made a layup with 1:03 remaining in the quarter for MMCRU’s lone basket after missing its first 13 shot attempts.
MMCRU acted with some urgency at the start of the fourth quarter scoring the first four points, making it a 37-30 score. The guest Wolves then built the lead back to double figures of 11 points (41-30) with 5:35 remaining in the game. Harris-Lake Park’s biggest lead of the second half came when Gracie Gunderson made a basket with 3:59 remaining in the game, making it 44-30.
Gunderson finished with 15 points to lead Harris-Lake Park. Tentinger matched that point total (15) before fouling out late in the contest for MMCRU.

Wolverines have terrible night on offense in loss to G-LR
PAULLINA — The South O’Brien girls basketball team suffered its worst shooting performance in recent memory on Tuesday at home against George-Little Rock (G-LR).
Only once a season ago did the Wolverines shoot under 20 percent for the game, shooting 18% at Hinton in which they scored just 15 points. Coming off a inspiring 45.5 percent against Alta-Aurelia in its season opener, South O’Brien hit rock bottom against the Mustangs. They finished 7-of-42 from the floor overall for 16.7 percent, which included 2-of-12 (15.4%) from 3-point distance.
Shooting that poorly makes it difficult to beat almost anybody, but South O’Brien led through three quarters, before drawing an o’fer in the fourth quarter, and ending up losing 41-28 in the War Eagle Conference matchup.
G-LR trailed the Wolverines 15-8 after one quarter, and 23-20 at halftime. At the end of the third quarter, South O’Brien held a two-point 28-26 lead. The Mustangs themselves did very little shooting percentage wise. They were 13-of-45 (28.9%), including 2-of-18 (11.1%) from 19-feet, 6-inches and beyond. G-LR struggled at the foul line as well shooting 44.8 percent (13-29).
The Mustangs have won all three meetings against the Wolverines since joining the War Eagle Conference a season ago. South O’Brien is looking to avoid a similar fate as last season when they started 0-7.
Junior Addison Hedberg led the Wolverines in scoring with seven points. Teammates Lindsay Einck and Chloe Hustedt each finished with five points. Hustedt added eight rebounds to pace South O’Brien, which finished with 28 as a team.
G-LR was led offensively by Lindsey Haken with 15 points, while Wyleigh Steenhoven chipped in 14. Victoria Storm was most effective on the glass pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds for the Mustangs, and adding four blocked shots. G-LR maintained a 41-28 edge in rebounding.
South O’Brien (0-2) will look to get in the win column tonight when they host Trinity Christian, who started their season Tuesday with a home loss to Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn.

Pocahontas Area throttle Ridge View
HOLSTEIN — It was clear from the beginning of the non-conference matchup between Pocahontas Area and Ridge View on Tuesday that the host Raptors got exposed. Exposed in the sense of inability to handle the Indians defensive pressure in the game.
Ridge View struggled to get the ball across half court and also made bad passes. As a result, they committed 38 turnovers in a 71-43 loss to Pocahontas Area.
It marks the worst home defeat for Ridge View in last six game’s played. Only three times a season ago did Ridge View suffer a home loss by 28 points or greater — at the time all were ranked opponents (Cherokee, Sioux Central, MVAOCOU).
This was just the second meeting between the two teams as they met for the first time in the Bound Era a season ago. A similar outcome as Pocahontas Area beat the Raptors 61-26 in Pocahontas.
The Ridge View team is definitely new look. Of the five Raptors starters two have never appeared in a varsity game before. Sophomore Chloe Murphy and freshman Jayna Aschinger made their varsity debuts. The other three starters were Reese Hawthorne with 17 starts from a season ago, Zoey Aschinger with 10 starts a season ago, and Claire Wandrey with 18 starts a season ago. Raptors top returning scorer from last season Wandrey averaged 8.5 points per game.
Eligible players not returning to the 2024-2025 roster are: sophomores Gillian Chance and Savannah Cudabeck, as well as juniors Naunika Crum and Arissa Kretlow. Graduates off the roster were Faith Freese, Shea Dutler and Madison Stowater.
The first quarter the Raptors outscored Pocahontas Area 10-8. At halftime, Ridge View was looking at a 17-point (39-19) deficit, which ballooned to 25 points (56-31) at the end of three quarters.
Pocahontas Area was led in scoring by Alayna Kakacek with 17 points and Madison Vial chipped in 13. The Pocahontas Area bench outscored Ridge View 21-3 in the game.
Freshman Jayna Aschinger had quite the debut for herself. She finished with 15 points on 5-of-10 shottibe overall, including a pair of 3-point baskets and 3-of-4 effort at the foul line. She also had four rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a blocked shot. Wandrey finished with 11 points, five rebounds, two steals, and a pair of blocked shots.
Ridge View girls (0-1) return to action on Friday hosting Lawton-Bronson (1-2) in a Western Valley Conference tip at 6 PM.
