Wolverines prevail in five sets, snap three match losing streak to Hawks

PAULLINA — The year was 2020, that was the last time a South O’Brien volleyball team had beaten Remsen St. Mary’s. The Wolverines knew if they wanted to end the three match losing streak and better there 7-14 match record they’d have little room for error against the Hawks.

The match went overtime, going the full five sets to decide a winner. The winner was South O’Brien 25-23, 21-25, 25-20, 15-25, 15-10 in War Eagle Conference action.

“We felt we had the better team. Our girls have not played to their potential but a few times. Sometimes that’s because its a better opponent, but other times we simply don’t show up to play. One of the keys against St. Mary’s was we came in with a winning mindset, trust what we have worked on all season, and play together unselfishly.”

Amy Schmidt, South O’Brien girls volleyball coach

Despite having only a .087 kill efficiency, South O’Brien kept mixing it up with its offensive attacks. In the end the Wolverines finished with 43 kills to St. Mary’s 45. The Hawks’ Tesse Tentinger finished with a match-best 16 kills. The Wolverines leader was Taylor Wulf with 12, and Chloe Hustedt added 10.

It wouldn’t be possible to post the numbers the two teams kills offensively if it weren’t for good sets and passes. A match-best 38 assists belonged the South O’Brien Ashlynn Gunnerson. St. Mary’s witnessed Josie Schwickerath finish with 35 of the Hawks 42 assists as a team.

Serving was another asset, as South O’Brien racked up 12 aces on 89-for-99 (89.9%) serving as a team. Wulf, Gunnerson, Reese Farquhar and Hustedt each had two aces. Raegan Plagge finished with a team-best three, and Addison Hedberg finished with one ace.

“We knew that when we served, we had to take every opportunity to score. We made a few changes in the serving areas and it paid off for us. Our girls didn’t lose focus and didn’t break under pressure, especially with the many centerline violations that were called.”

Amy Schmidt, South O’Brien head volleyball coach

The loss drops Remsen St. Mary’s record to 7-18 overall, 4-6 in conference play. South O’Brien improves to 8-14 overall, 5-5 in the War Eagle. The Wolverine’s had exceeded their win total from each of the last two season and are presently tied with their win total from 2021.
