Western Christian win battle of ranked teams topping Cherokee

HULL — For the second time in a span of three days, Iowa Prep Illustrated’s Class 3A fifth-ranked Cherokee volleyball team has been on the receiving end of a loss to third-ranked Western Christian. In the most recent meeting on Tuesday, the guest Braves lost in five sets 19-25, 25-19, 25-19, 22-25, 8-15.

In their meeting three days earlier the teams met in the Kooima-Kooima-Varilek Tournament hosted by Western Christian and Cherokee was on the losing end of a 2-1 match.

The Wolfpack’s domination of Cherokee has never been any more clear with wins in 21 of the last 22 meetings since the inception of the Bound Era in 2007. The lone Cherokee win during that span came back on October 10, 2023, in a five set dogfight in Cherokee.

It was senior Night for the Wolfpack on Tuesday. Western Christian kind of took the air out of Cherokee right away racing out to a 11-2 lead in the first set. The match came down to the team with the fewest errors — Western Christian.

Cherokee opportunity to feel good about themselves came with identical 25-19 wins in the second and third sets. Senior Elise Anderson led the Braves in assists with 27 and Addy Wolfswinkel chipped in with 15. The Westerners’ junior Maggie Van Schepan finished with 38 assists.

This allowed the likes of Scarlett Winterfeld to drop 18 kills, and her teammates Britney Bliek and Morgan Kooima each to finish with 14 kills. Cherokee’s kill leader was senior Laney Wolfswinkel with a season-best 20 kills. Fellow senior Keylee Gregg added 10.

Western Christian had a slight three kills (55-52) edge over the Braves, but Cherokee was more productive with their attacks. They finished with a .255 kill efficiency, and Western Christian finished with a .170 kill efficiency.

Western Christian had amassed 102 service attempts in the match and were successful on 90.2 percent (92) of those. Yet another Wolfswinkel left an imprint on the match. It was the Westerners’ Autumn Wolfswinkel finishing 19-for-20 (95%) with a pair of service aces.

Cherokee wound up serving to a percentage of 90 percent (90-for-99). Kendyl Fox was a perfect 11-for-11 for Cherokee.

Western Christian with the match win improves to 25-12 overall on the season. The loss in the non-conference matchup leaves Cherokee with a 24-5 match record. Next for Cherokee, the talent-loaded Sioux City Heelan Tournament on Saturday.

Failures occur limiting Wolverines opportunities, fall to Gehlen

LeMARS — LeMars Gehlen avenged a 2-1 loss to South O’Brien at the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn on September 28.

The host Jays cashed in on opportunities the Wolverines failed to capitalize on. South O’Brien’s inability to create plays for themselves was all LeMars Geheln needed, winning 25-15, 25-14, 25-22.

“On a rare occasion when we passed well, we were able to run our offense. When we used a good pass and good set, we got kills. Many times we were pushing the ball over or tipping right into our opponent’s hands. When this happens, we are their best setter. This was the case tonight.”

Amy Schmidt, South O’Brien head volleyball coach

The Wolverines finished with a .113 kill efficiency and 22 kills. Presently, South O’Brien is averaging 7.9 kills per set with an .083 kill efficiency — 10th best in the War Eagle Conference. There are only three member schools that average less, they are: Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, Harris-Lake Park, and West Sioux.

Individually, Taylor Wulf and Raegan Plagge each finished with six kills apiece to pace the Wolverines. Plagge, a sophomore currently is tied for tenth in the conference for total number of kills posted. All 17 of South O’Brien’s assists recorded went to Ashlynn Gunnerson.

“We did have a few outstanding offensive plays. Good teams don’t just have a few offensive plays, they create many and we just didn’t do that tonight.”

Amy Schmidt, South O’Brien head volleyball coach

Abbey Nelson took over the libero position in the second set and came away with nine digs. Teammate Reese Farquhar finished with seven digs. As a team, the Wolverines finished up 38 digs. They also finished with four blocks in the loss. Plagge finished with 1.5, Farquhar 1.0, Tori Schueller 1.0, and credited with half a block was Gunnerson.

Offensively, LeMars Gehlen finished a plus +16 in kill margin (38-22), and boasted a .256 kill efficiency with their attacks. Individually, Aurora Goebel finished with a match-best 12 kills. Rysaiah Sitzmann finished with 10 kills.

LeMars Gehlen also served to a 93.2 percent accuracy, converting 69-of-74 attempts and posting nine ace serves.

“We had a hard time getting our block to close. When we got our middles to get the block set, we were complimented with our outside or right side blockers, so we didn’t have as strong of a block. We did not play very well in the back row as we were out of position a lot. Moving to our defensive positioning seems to be a struggle. A very tough loss after we played well earlier in the season to beat Gehlen in a tournament.”
