Braves Blitz Orabs From Onset, Roll 49-6

CHEROKEE — Iowa Prep Illustrated’s ninth-ranked Cherokee hosted Sheldon in a Class 2A District 1 affair on Friday and buried Sheldon early with 27 points in the first quarter, scoring on a rushing touchdown, a passing touchdown, an interception return, and a punt return.

The lead was more than enough as the Braves took advantage of their opportunities, finishing off the Orabs 49-6. The win improves Cherokee’s overall record at 6-2 and 3-2 in district play. The win solidified the Braves playoff position.

Sheldon on its first possession ran four plays before having to punt. Cherokee’s Henry Lugar took the punt and returned it 82 yards for the score. Cherokee’s PAT kick was blocked. With 9:44 remaining in the opening quarter, the onslaught began.

The Braves first offensive possession, Cherokee was facing a fourth down and seven situation, and Jaxon Paulsrud found Blake Lovell on a 41 yard touchdown pass with 5:48 remaining. Coy Lewis converted the first of his five PAT kicks in the game.

From their own 29 yard line Sheldon quarterback Landon Sietstra dropped back on third and 16 released his pass, and had Paulsrud step in front of the intended receiver. Paulsrud took it took the house for the 37 yard interception return. Lewis booted the PAT kick and with 4:10 left, Cherokee was leading 20-0.

On the ensuing kickoff, Cherokee did an onside kick and covered the football. Three plays later on third and 13, ‘Abracadabra’ Paulsrud Magic raced 37 yards to paydirt for the score. Lewis split the uprights with the PAT kick. With 2:38 remaining, The Braves had Sheldon down 27-0.

With 1:09 left in the opening quarter, Sheldon got the ball into Cherokee territory for the first time. The Orabs drove to the Cherokee 11 yard line before Blake Lovell intercepted a pass to halt the Orabs scoring attempt. Cherokee took over at their own seven yard line. The Braves went three-and-out, punting the football. The pigskin hit a Sheldon player and was recovered by Cherokee’s Lugar at the Orab’s 48 yard line.

On first down from the Orabs one yard line, Lovell punched it in. Paulsrud added the two-point PAT run, and Cherokee led 35-0, activating the continous clock with 6:20 to play in the first half.

Cherokee had the first offensive possession of the second half. They ran three plays and were in the endzone again on a Lugar touchdown reception covering 32 yards from Paulsrud. Lewis PAT kick made it 42-0.

Preventing the shutout, Sheldon found the end zone with 8:30 remaining in the game. Isaac Wenthe caught a 33 yard touchdown pass from Sietstra. The Orabs elected to go for the two-point PAT and the pass was unsuccessful.

Sheldon recovered a fumble on the Braves next offensive possession. Cherokee’s Christian Vander Broek then scooped up a Orabs fumble, and returned it 66 yards for the score. Lewis added his final PAT kick.

The 49 points offensively for Cherokee was a season-best output, and best offensive production for points in the last nine games — 50-0 win Sept. 1, 2023 versus Sioux Central.

Cherokee racked up 343 yards of total offense (187 passing, 156 rushing). Sheldon finishes the year 2-6 overall and were winless 0-5 in district play. The Orabs finished with 223 yards of total offense (148 passing, 75 rushing).

Defensively, Sheldon was led in tackles by Kolt Roos five five solo’s. Sawyer Olson and Josh Wolf each had a fumble recovery.

For Cherokee, Mallon Malausky wears the number 50 jersey, and played in comparison to another number 50 from the NFL ranks A.J. Hawk. Malausky was all over the field in the game, finishing with a total of 7.5 tackles, including five solo’s, and two tackles for loss. Lovell also had 7.5 tackles with five solo’s for the Braves. Paulsrud, Lovell, and Logan Stowater with interceptions. Vander Broek and Lugar recovered fumbles for Cherokee.

    MMCRU shut outs Alta-Aurelia in regular season finale

    ALTA — The MMCRU football team is no longer in taxi mode. Since opening the season 0-2, and with the return of several key players in Week 3, the Royals have taken off with five straight victories. They have averaged 33.4 points per game during that span, while allowing just 10.2 points game.

    With their sights on a deep playoff run, MMCRU finished the regular season on Friday with their second shut out win of the season. Alta-Aurelia was on the receiving end of a 28-0 whitewashing.

    The word in this one was defense as the Royals came up with three Alta-Aurelia turnovers. Brayson Mulder returned a fumble 40 yards for a score. John Schmillen also had a fumble recovery, and Parker Glassmaker hauled in his second interception of the 2024 season.

    Alta-Aurelia finished with only 127 yards of total offense against MMCRU. The Warriors finished with just 11 passing yards and 116 rushing yards on 48 carries. It was another strong performance defensively senior Grant Prescott who finished with 9.5 tackles, including six solo’s. It brings his season leading total to 46 tackles with 29 solo’s. MMCRU also picked up three quarterback sacks of Alta-Aurelia’s Camden Reinert. Those sacks going to Mulder, Jace Colling, and Glassmaker.

    Turn to the opposite line of scrimmage, MMCRU finished with 276 total yards of offense. They finished with 21 rushing attempts for 114 yards and added 162 passing yards. Eli Harpenau was 10-for-13 passing for 128 yards and an interception. Mulder got into the act tossing a 25 yards touchdown to Michael Peterson. Kamden Bork was also 1-for-1 for nine yards passing.

    Mulder led MMCRU in rushing finishing with 70 yards and two scores on nine carries.

    The Royals led 7-0 at halftime. They added a pair of scores in the third score to make it 21-0.

    South O’Brien loses to A-W, finishes winless in regular season

    AKRON — History was made on Friday in Class A District 1 football action. South O’Brien its regular season winless at 0-8, a first for the Wolverines in the Bound Era since the start of 2007.

    Akron-Westfield’s win over South O’Brien makes it back-to-back season the Westerners have gotten the best of the Wolverines. In Friday’s South O’Brien 28-17 loss.

    “As a group, we played better as a team on offense, defense, and special teams. I told the guys after the game that we had gotten better every week, but we couldn’t find a way to get over the hump. It’s another unfortunate example of that”

    The host racked up 439 yards of total offense.; A good chunk of those yards belonged to Westerners’ senior quarterback Tatum Wilken.

    Wilken finished the game 10-of-19 passing for 223 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 170 yards on 22 carries and scored on a 56 yards touchdown jaunt in the opening quarter. Wilken’s touchdown passes went for 61, 19, and 24 yards.

    Hayden Wahlberg led all receivers with six catches for 140 yards and a Akron-Westfield touchdown. Reggie McKee and Brock Hansen also had touchdown grabs in the win.

    Trailing 14-0 with 3:14 remaining in the first quarter Derek Paulsen pulled in a 74 yard aerial from Jaden Kreber for the score. the Paulsen PAT kick made it 14-7. The only points of the second quarter belonged to South O’Brien with Paulsen splitting the uprights on a 27 yard field goal with six seconds remaining in the first half.
    Heading to the locker rooms at halftime, South O’Brien trailed Akron-Westfield 14-10.

    Paulsen would finish the game with four receptions for 126 yards and the one touchdown.

    South O’Brien took a three-point lead at 17-14 with 5:16 remaining in the third quarter. Wolverines’ junior signal-caller Jaden Kreber found paydirt from six yards away. Paulsen’s PAT kick was good.

    Akron-Westfield didn’t waste too much time before responding to the Wolverines score. With 1:09 remaining in the third quarter, Wilken found Reggie McKee on a 19 yard strike. Nathan Schoenfelder booted the Westerners PAT kick and they were back in front for good 21-17.

    A South O’Brien drive early in the fourth quarter ended when the Wolverines’ failed to convert on fourth down.

    Akron-Westfield added yet another score to increase their lead with 9:41 remaining in the game. Wilken aired it out once more finding Brock Hansen as they two connected on a 24 yard pass and catch. Schoenfelder’s PAT kick made it an 11-point Westerners lead.

    The Wolverines offensive possession that followed ended on downs. They got one more shot in the fourth stanza, but a Kreber pass was picked off by the Westerners’ Hansen . Time simply was against South O’Brien in the fourth quarter.

    “Caden Wittrock had a good game running the football. We ran the ball as well as we have at any point this season. Up front, they got the job done, and Derek (Paulsen) had a bunch of yards receiving. Offensively, we did fine except for that fourth down.”

    Failing to make the postseason playoff’s, South O’Brien elected to play a ninth-week game at West Monona, which is slated for a 7 PM kickoff in Onawa on Thursday, seeking that elusive first win. West Monona will also come into that contest with an 0-8 record.

    Ridge View locks up third-seed for playoffs with MVAOCOU win

    HOLSTEIN — Wrapping up their regular season, Ridge View’s 36-13 victory on Friday in Class 1A District 1, the Raptors secured a third-seed in the playoff’s to begin Friday, October 25.

    The win on Friday over MVAOCOU is the Raptors third consecutive in three meetings since 2012 against the Rams.

    Junior running back Lucas Heilman saved his best-performance after an early season injury sidelined him. Heilman toted the pigskin 17 times for 175 yards and three touchdowns. Heilman was one of three Raptors to rush for more than 100 yards.

    Sophomore quarterback Raif Jensen had 13 rushes for 120 yards and a touchdown. Senior Gavin Vohs finished with 14 carries for 106 yards. As a team, the Raptors finished with 379 yards on 48 carries.

    Ridge View’s passing game was minimal, as Raif Jensen threw for 10 yards going for a touchdown pass to Carson Harriman.

    On the defensive side, Kellen Jensen had a team-best 9.5 tackles, including seven solo’s. Conner Jacobson recorded 7.5 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss. Vohs and Austin Wood added seven tackles for the Raptors who held MVAOCOU to just 219 total yards.

    Ridge View led 7-0 after one quarter and 22-6 at halftime. The Raptors expanded the lead to 29-6 at the conclusion of the third quarter.

    MVAOCOU’s 153 total rushing yards saw senior Luther Cameron account for 111 yards on 19 carries and a touchdown.

    The Rams defense has Titis Morley scoop up a Ridge View fumble, and the senior returned it 47 yards for the other MVAOCOU score.
