SANBORN — ‘Keep It Simple’ is exactly the way the 5K course was laid out at the Sanborn Golf and Country Club for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Invitational on Monday. A flatter course and no tough terrain to challenge runners.
With that being said the favorites to do well did. Individually on the girls side, senior Nora Peterson won going away. Peterson took to the course at the No. 2-ranked runner in Class 1A, and finished with a time of 19:24.56. Senior Linnea Bloom of Sioux Central is ranked 26th in Class 1A and finished the course in 20:50.51.
The highest place finish for a MMCRU Royals runner was junior Alisa Pajazetovic, finishing the course in a time of 26:24.46, earning her 22nd place out of a field of 34 competitors.
As a team, It boiled down to two teams from the five team field vying for top honors. It came down to the tie-breaker favoring Sioux Central with its sixth place runner finishing two positions higher than Alta-Aurelia’s. Ranked No. 17, Sioux Central finished with a 36 team score, the same at ninth-ranked (Class 1A) Alta-Aurelia who was left to settle for runner-up.
The MMCRU girls finished fifth with a team tally of 134.
The MMCRU boy’s earned a pair of Top-10 individual place finishes from seniors’ Lucas Braun and Clint Staab. Braun finished fourth in a time of 18:34.48, while Staab was eighth place with an effort of 19:17.52. The Royals team finished fourth with a team score of 93.
Crowned team champion was Class 1A ninth-ranked Sioux Central (29). The closest to the Rebels was Alta-Aurelia 45 points off the pace with a team score of 74. Finishing two point fewer than MMCRU was the host Hawks of Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, who wound up copping third place.
From a field of 42 runners the boys event came down to ninth-ranked (Class 1A) Lucos Wernimont of Sioux Central earning gold with a time of 17:25.27. Second place went to Alta-Aurelia’s junior Jacob Launderville with a 17:57.52 clocking.
MMCRU runners will travel to the Alta-Aurelia Invitational on Monday, September 30 for their next meet of the season.
