HOLSTEIN — Standing in the way of Ridge View and upping its overall record above .500 on Thursday was Westwood. The guest Rebels had lost to the Raptors in 14 straight meetings that dated back to September 2018.

Ridge View got off to a 1-0 start in the match in a highly competitive first set, winning by a score of 28-26. The remainder of the match was equally as competitive, but Westwood was the team to prevail 25-22, 25-20, 25-21.

The loss left the Raptors with an 8-9 overall match record. Westwood improves their overall record to 8-3.

“Yes I expected this to be a tough match up for us with two of our starters out. The girls have had a long week with some big conference matchups after a long round robin tournament at SCC (South Central Calhoun). Everyone has stepped up a lot to be leaders and carry more of the load. We are getting better everyday. Kiara (Luscombe) and Gabi (Mason) especially have really stepped up their game. Leslie (Avina), Claire (Wandrey), and Naunika (Crum) are able to make sure big time plays for us as well. The important thing is that no one has given up. Even when we get behind or drop a set. They still fight until the last point. I think this mindset will benefit us later on in the season too.”

The Raptors were again without the service of senior middle hitter Sydney Blackmore and senior setter Lilly Whitmer.

“Syd is regaining strength everyday so I expect her back within a week or so. Lillian’s timeline is tougher to navigate because of the nature of her injury. We want her safe and healthy before she returns.”

Monica Brandhorst, Ridge View head volleyball coach

Westwood finished with a edge in total kills 51-44, a minus -7 for the Raptors, who finished with a .099 kill efficiency. Luscombe and Mason collectively led the Raptors in kills each finishing with 14. Callie Wendt finished with 39 of the Raptors 42 assists.

Westwood had a match-best 42 assists from Carlee Johnston a freshman. Junior Brenna Johnson finished with a match-high 17 kills. Senior teammates Blair Dietschy and Ashlynn Davis each had 11 kills.
