HINTON — The Class 2A Iowa Prep Illustrated’s third-ranked Hinton Blackhawks preyed on the Wolverines of South O’Brien Tuesday evening, winning in dominant fashion 25-9, 25-9, 25-10.

This loss by the Wolverines marks the sixth consecutive to Hinton. The Blackhawks came into the matchup having won 94.4 percent of the previous 18 all-time meeting going back to 2010.

The Wolverines have dropped back-to-back War Eagle Conference matches on the season, first to Akron-Westfield and tonight to Hinton. The two losses coming in a span of five days.

“We didn’t play well fundamentally and Bailey (Boeve) and her team had a great deal to do with that, plain and simple. Respect all and fear no one. We continue to work on our fundamentals and regardless of who we play, those fundamentals are our focus. When we lose focus, we struggle and things don’t go well. I can’t take anything away from Hinton as they are by far, the best team we’ve played along with having two of the best players Bailey and Karlyn (Kovarna) in the conference.”

Amy Schmidt, South O’Brien head volleyball coach

All seven assists in the match for South O’Brien belonged to senior Ashlynn Gunnerson. She also tied for team-high honors with Addison Hedberg in digs, each finishing with seven. Hedberg also turned in a flawless 7-fot-7 effort with an ace at the service line. As a team, the Wolverines finished up 27-for-29 with a pair of aces.

The Wolverines finished with just 10 kills, committing 12 errors for a -.034 kill efficiency. Chloe Hustedt led South O’Brien with three kills.

“Bailey’s (Boeve) probably the best athlete I’ve coached against in all my years in coaching. She’s solid offensively and defensively. She’s such a difference maker for her team. Her presence alone, gives her team a huge advantage. Along with this, she’s probably the most humble player.” We were on the defensive side of things most of the night.  We’ll continue to work on fundamentals, but also our mindset which is so important in bouncing back after two tough conference losses.”

Amy Schmidt, South O’Brien head volleyball coach

The loss drops South O’Brien to 3-2 in conference play and 3-7 overall. On Saturday, The Wolverines played in the West Sioux Tournament and were scheduled to face three different opponents.
