HOLSTEIN — It was two very different outcomes for area schools MMCRU and host Ridge View on Saturday at the Ridge View Classic.
MMCRU struggled dropping two of three matches, falling to Westwood 2-0 (8-21, 13-21), OABCIG 2-0 (19-21, 12-21), and defeating Newell-Fonda 2-1 (13-21, 21-17, 16-14). It was the Royals initial match victory of the season following an 0-5 start to the season. The present 1-5 match record equals that of 2018. The worst beginning to a volleyball season was 2017 when MMCRU began 0-6.

MMCRU had two previous meetings with Westwood in 2020 and the only other meeting came in September of 2017. The Rebels lead the all-time series 3-2 against the Royals.
OABCIG has won back-to-back (2-0) shutout victories against MMCRU. The Falcons have won 6-of-9 meeting with the Royals since the start of the 2017 season.
MMCRU ended a losing streak of two matches to Newell-Fonda. The two schools hadn’t met one another since October of 2019.
Since dropping their season opener 3-0 to South Central Calhoun back on August 27, the Raptors have been clicking on all cylinder, reeling off since match wins.
The first victim to fall on Saturday was East Sac County 25-27, 21-13, 15-12. The two teams also saw each other in the Classic finale. Ridge View then drilled Ar-We-Va 21-9, 21-5. The win marked the 17th win in 17 meetings for the Raptors against the Rockets since 2010.
Logan-Magnolia made the long trip to Holstein and was disposed of quickly 21-14, 21-9. Ridge View is 6-0 all-time in sets and 3-0 in matches against Logan-Magnolia.
A familiar Ida County foe in OABCIG was the next opponent in the Classic semifinal. The Raptors earned their sixth consecutive win over OABCIG and ninth in the last 10 matches since September 2019. Set scores were 25-18, 25-15.
In the finale Ridge View took down East Sac County once more 25-20, 25-13.
Both MMCRU (1-5) and Ridge View (6-1) returned to action on Tuesday. The Royals hosted South O’Brien, and the Raptors ventured to Mapleton to face MVAOCOU.
