SPIRIT LAKE — The Iowa Great lakes XC Invitational 5K events held at the Brooks Golf Course on Thursday, saw a total of 238 runners in two divisions.
Of those runners several were individually ranked, including eight girls and boys runners from Cherokee.
This early in the season you can simply toss those rankings out the window as anything is possible. That was the case in Class A girls competition. Winner was Sioux Center sophomore Audrina Jones with a time of 19:51.85. Runner-up was Spencer senior Peyton Morey in a finish of 19:57.34.
Cherokee’s highest finish came from senior Stefi Beisswenger with a 21st place showing out of 74 runners. Beisswenger posted a time of 21:13.39. She came into the meet ranked ninth in Class 2A.
The individual champion in a field of 35 runners for Class B was Tyra Schupbach from West Bend-Mallard. The junior fourth ranked in Class 1A finished with a winning time of 19:17.86. Runner-up was Sioux Central senior Linnea Bloom with a effort of 21:44.37.
Team champion in Class 1A was the gals from Sioux Center with a team score of 39. The Warriors ranked seventh in Class 3A, outlasted three other ranked squads in runner-up MOC/FV (#15 ranked Class 3A), fifth place finisher Cherokee (#12 ranked in Class 2A) and sixth place finisher Okoboji (#15 in Class 2A).
The Class B girls champion was Sioux Central finishing with a total of 23 team points. The Rebels entered today tenth ranked in Class 1A. They finished ahead of runner-up West Bend-Mallard’s team total of 40.
MMCRU had three runners individually competing in Class B with junior Alisa Pajazetovic finishing 16th place with a time of 25:51.62. South O’Brien’s senior Hailei Wallinga was the Wolverines highest place finisher, winding up 30th in a time of 31:48.12.
SIOUX CENTRAL TITLE SWEEP
The Sioux Central boys team completed the Class B sweep, winning the team title over runner-up Sibley-Ocheyedan 29 to the Generals 48 team score.
Individually, the Generals and Rebels also took meet medalist and runner-up honors. Junior Ben Byers of Sibley-Ocheyedan was crowned champion after a winning time of 16:54.75. Sophomore Lucos Wernimont crossed the finish with a time of 17:10.01 for the Rebels of Sioux Central. There was a total of 42 runners in the Class B field.
MMCRU’s Lucas Braun finished with a Top-10 outcome, winding up ninth place in a time of 18:47.59. The top performer for South O’Brien was promising freshman Landen Davenport who finished 18th place with a time of 20:24.81.
Team wise in Class B boys, MMCRU wound up fourth place with a team score of 102. South O’Brien finished sixth with a 125 team score.
BRAVES NINTH OUT OF 12 SCHOOLS
The Class A field of team tallied 12 schools. Forest City made the long trip and went home with the team title. The Indians outlasted the efforts of Spirit Lake. Forest City team tally was 66, and Spirit Lake’s was 73.
Cherokee wound up ninth place with a team score of 265. In a field of 87 runners individually, Junior Cully Mizner-Funderman was the Braves highest place finisher. The Class 2A 19th ranked Mizner-Funderman posted a time of 18:39.76, settling for 41st place over.
Two additional ranked Cherokee runner Kyler Ducommun (2A #23), and Hayden Brown (2A #29) finished 59th and 62nd place, respectively.
