HARTLEY — South O’Brien girls basketball team doesn’t have a whole lot of depth with only a three person bench. When a starter struggles the Wolverines head coach D.J. Hansen goes to his bench without a serious offensive threat as an option.
That was tested on Tuesday at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn throughout the game as fouls were getting the better of the Wolverines. By game’s end two starters Reese Farquhar and Chloe Hustedt ended with foul fouls, as did Abby Woodall who came off the South O’Brien bench.
It was a slow beginning to the game offensively as South O’Brien scored just three points in the opening eight minutes of play. They trailed 11-3 after one quarter, before having their most productive quarter of the game in the second, when they scored 15 points to pull within two points (20-18) at the half.
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn outscored South O’Brien in the second half 33-25 to earn the 53-43 War Eagle Conference win. The host Hawks made it eight consecutive wins against South O’Brien and completed the season sweep, also winning a 10-point (51-41) final back on December 17.
The more physical Hawks dominated on the glass holding a plus +16 margin on the boards (34-18). Senior Kylee Schiphoff of Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn pulled down a game-high 10. She also led all scorer with 23 points. All seven field goals belonging to Schiphoff came from behind the 3-point arch. Fellow senior Abby Douma wound up with 14 points, adding seven rebounds, five blocked shots and pair of steals to her credits.
It was quite the game offensive for Wolverines’ junior Farquhar. She knocked down four 3-point baskets, finishing 8-of-14 from the floor overall for a team-best 21 points. Farquhar was done as she added a team-best six rebounds, and pair of assists and steals.
South O’Brien (3-12) is in store for quite a challenger on Friday as they face unbeaten (15-0) and IPI’s (Iowa Prep Illustrated) third-ranked in Class 2A Hinton in Paullina. The Blackhawks will be looking to make it five straight wins over the Wolverines in the series all-time between the conference foes.
