CHEROKEE — The Class 3A Region 6 Quarterfinal volleyball match for Cherokee began with Elise Anderson credited with an assist and Deidra Doeden the kill. The remainder of the opening set of the match against Eagle Grove didn’t go as smooth.
The Braves allowed Eagle Grove to hang around in the first set due to four service errors, five hitting errors, one passing and one blocking errors against the Eagles. Cherokee had back-back hitting errors on set one before finally putting away the set one win.
Good team can play badly and still find ways to win. That is exactly what Cherokee did. The first set finished at 25-11 favoring the Braves. Junior Macy Gravenish ended the second set with an ace serve for Cherokee, as the Braves came away with the win, 25-9.
Senior Laney Wolfswinkel got into a rhythm in the third set with her serving. Following a 1-1 tie in the third set, Cherokee reeled off 19 straight points, and sophomore Mahren Maulausky ended the third set and match (25-2) with a perfect serve for the ace.
The Braves overcome the slow start to finish with a .432 kill efficiency posting 37 kills. It was a four-headed attack of Addy Wolfswinkel, Laney Wolfswinkel, Doeden and Keylee Gregg. Addy Wolfswinkel finished with a match-best 11 kills and a remarkable .786 kill efficiency. Laney Wolfswinkel had nine kills and .400 kill efficiency. Doeden’s eight kill were recorded on a .500 kill efficiency. Gregg added six kills and finished with a .267 kill efficiency.
Senior Elise Anderson helped the cause posting 18 assists. With a lot of confidence, Doeden’s impact at the net saw her add 5.5 blocks with five solos.
The Braves finished at 93.1 percent (67-for-72). Laney Wolfswinkel was 31-for 32 (96.9%) with five aces. Macy Gravenish was a perfect 12-for-12 with two aces.
Cherokee defeated Eagle Grove 3-0 last October. That is the only other meeting between the two programs on record.
Eagle Grove finished the season on a three match losing streak and end their season with a 3-16 record.
