Champion performance by Cherokee at MOC/FV Dutch Invitational

ORANGE CITY — A destined team in Cherokee Volleyball captured their first tournament win of the season on Tuesday, as the Iowa Prep Illustrated Class 3A eighth ranked Braves came home with the hardware.

Cherokee defeated host MOC/FV and Sheldon in Pool Play A to advance to the championship against Sergeant Bluff-Luton. It was the second head-to-head matchup of the season for Cherokee against the Warriors, defeating them on August 31 at the Unity Christian Tournament 2-0. Fast Forward and the Braves came through with their fifth consecutive win over Sergeant Bluff-Luton 21-17, 23-21.

DUTCH PASTING

Against the host Dutch the Braves were victorious 21-18, 21-18. Sophomore Addy Wolfswinkel was the floor general as the setter, finishing with 11 of the team’s 18 assists. Senior Elise Anderson added five. Sophomore Deidra Doeden was dominant offensively with a .727 kill efficiency to go with a match-best eight kills. Keylee Gregg and Laney Wolfswinkel tied for match-best efforts with 11 digs apiece.

Leaders for MOC/FV was Aubrey Van Den Bosch with 10 assists. Three Dutch players (Deviryn McCarthy, Kayla Cleveringa, Ady Jeltema) each posted five kills. As a team, MOC/FV finished the match with a .136 kill efficiency.

It was the first match of the season for MOC/FV.

WHAT IS AN ORAB?

Cherokee had a well played performance against the Orabs of Sheldon, winning the match 21-10, 21-8. The Braves have won the last four match-ups with Sheldon, including the Earlybird Tournament on August 29 with a 2-0 shutout.

Addy Wolfswinkel accounted for 10 of her team’s 17 assists. It was a potent two player domination for Cherokee offensively in attacks. The Braves tallied 18 kills with a team efficiency of .262. Leading the way was Laney Wolfswinkel with 7 kills and a .385 efficiency. Doeden wound up with four kills and a .429 efficiency. Addy Wolfswinkel also led Cherokee in digs with eight.

The Sheldon loss leaves the Orabs with a 5-4 match record for the season.

BRAVES WIN WAR WITH WARRIORS

One, two, and three, with Cherokee victorious over Sergeant Bluff-Luton in the championship tilt of the MOC/FV Dutch Invitational 21-17, 23-21.

The only low point of the match was the Braves serving effort. They were 34-for-41 with a single ace serve, a season worst 82.9 percent.

The win over Sergeant Bluff-Luton was the fifth consecutive against the Dutch, including a 2-0 victory at the Unity Christian Tournament on August 31.

Confidence and ability is becoming more and more evident with the play of sophomore Addy Wolfswinkel. She made her presence known in numerous statistical categories assists (13), kills (3), digs (6) and serving 12-for-13 (92.3%) and the Braves lone ace serve. Big sister in senior Laney Wolfswinkel led Cherokee in kills with nine and a .368 efficiency. She also led in digs with 13. She added a block and finished 5-for-8 in serving.

The Braves posted 23 kills and just behind Laney Wolfswinkel was fellow senior Keylee Gregg. She recorded seven kills with a .217 efficiency. She also came away with seven digs and had one block assist in the match.

The defeat for Sergeant Bluff-Luton leaves the Warriors with a 6-4 match record overall.

Cherokee and MOC/FV compete in Pool Play A on Tuesday in the Dutch Invitational in Orange City hosted by MOC/FV.

Wolverines take chunk out of Wolves for first win

LAKE PARK — Positive Outcome Comes To Those Who Continue To Fight!

That is exactly what the South O’Brien volleyball team did on Tuesday against Harris-Lake Park. The Wolverines had finished last season losing their final three matches, and begun this season with five consecutive match losses.

Fly the W Flag! The Wolverines trip home was a happy one, winning in three straight sets 25-18, 25-11, 25-13. It marked the fifth consecutive victory by South O’Brien against a Wolves team. It is their sixth win in last seven meetings going back to September 19, 2019.

Senior Ashlynn Gunnerson had arguably her best effort of the season. She set for 23 of the team’s 25 assists. She was 9-for-11 serving, came up with four digs, and even registered a kill.

Sophomore Reagan Plagge is a serious weapon offensively for South O’Brien. The 6-foot sophomore finished with 11 kills and added three blocks. She also went 8-for-9 from the service line. Another weapon for the Wolverines is 5-foot-11 junior Taylor Wulf. She had seven kills, three digs, 1-1/2 blocks, and was 22-for-24 with two ace in serving.

Harris-Lake Park struggled to the tune of a -.169 kill efficiency committing 20 attack errors in the match. The Wolves finished 33-for-38 (86.8%) with three aces. The Loss keeps Harris-Lake Park winless on the season.

Royals continue losing streak to Westerners

MARCUS — Guest Akron-Westfield didn’t wait for any hospitality on behalf of MMCRU, the Westerners come out and pinned a 3-0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-13).

There were no fond memories for MMCRU which dropped their fifth consecutive match to Akron-Westfield. The Royals haven’t earned a win in the all-time series since September 15, 2020.

Westerners’ senior MacKenzie Hughes showed why she is regarded as one of the premiere players in the War Eagle Conference, not mentioning all of Northwest Iowa. Hughes came away with a match-best 14 kills, a .235 kill efficiency, 10 digs and a perfect 12-for-12 with one ace in serving.

The Royals recorded 26 assists and an identical 26 kills against Akron-Westfield. Tia Tentinger lofted 14 assists, and Kyle Harpenau had eight. Chloe Alesch finished with a team-best eight kills, one better than teammate Lana Florine’s seven. Aleah Lux added five kills.

Royals’ senior Breanna Staab, Harpenau, and Tentinger all finished with double-digits for digs. Staab led the way with 16, while Harpenau tallied 12 and Tentinger 10. Staab was a flawless 7-for-7 serving with one ace.

MMCRU wrapped up their busy week having played against the ranked Blackhawks of Hinton on Thursday, and having traveled to the Ridge View Tournament on Saturday for three matches.
